In the early 1980’s, the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean requested UNEP to create an environmental training network for high-level experts. As a result, the General Programme of the Environmental Training Network for Latin America and the Caribbean started in 1982, supported by UNEP. The main objective of this network is to coordinate, promote and support activities in the areas of environmental education, capacity-building and training in the region.

Decision 3 of the Twentieth Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Environment for Latin America and the Caribbean, Cartagena, Colombia, 8-31 March 2016 expressed that “ environmental education is a key part of policies for sustainable development, to take care of the planet, to understand the causes of environmental degradation processes and its consequences, to propose solutions and to transform values, behavior and visions towards sustainable development, devoted to poverty eradication, peace, inclusion, respect for multiculturalism, gender equality, participation of youth, sustainable consumption and production, decent work, improving the quality of life and environmental protection” (

At the global level, UNEP is heading the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), a platform that engages universities globally in responding to the challenges of sustainable development, by supporting innovative and relevant approaches to education. UNEP/ROLAC has been supporting this initiative in the region aiming integrating environment and sustainability aspects in the curricula of the Universities, improving daily procurement-related operations, water and energy use, and waste disposal management as well as relationships with communities.


The objective of this internship is to to support the implementation of the work plan 2016-2018 of the Environmental Training Network (ETN) for Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinated by UNEP/ROLAC.


The main activities to be carried out within the framework of this consultancy are:

1.Support the implementation of the activities of the work plan 2016-2018 of the Environmental Training Network of Latin America and the Caribbean, based on decision 3 on environmental education adopted by the Twentieth Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean.

2.Review literature and prepare summaries with main findings on successful experiences on environmental education in Latin America and the Caribbean (formal, non-formal and informal), in line with sustainable development objective (SDG) 4 on quality of education and, particularly, its target 7.

3.Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops, seminars, webinars and other similar activities setting agendas, developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers, and report writing.

4.Support other activities as requested.

2. 1.Expected results

The main outputs / products for this internship are listed below.

1.Activities under the ETN work plan 2016-2018:

1.1Map out education and training activities in the region, including topics on sustainable lifestyles, climate change, greenhouse gases emissions, wildlife trafficking, solid waste management, chemicals and mercury pollution, disasters risk management, biodiversity, reforestation and forest regeneration, and air quality, sustainable consumption and production partners, amongst other;

1.2Draft aspects on criteria on environmental standards and sustainability skills for public servants;

1.3Further refine the analysis on environmental education indicators in the region;

1.4Identify opportunities for cooperation on environmental education between the Environmental Training Network and the Secretariats of the main multilateral environmental agreements;

1.5Draft materials and information for the ETN website and other dissemination means.

2.Papers with main findings on successful experiences on environmental education in Latin America and the Caribbean.

3.Draft meeting programmes, background documents, letter of invitations, and list of participants amongst other.

4.Two to 3 virtual meetings with the focal points of the ETN organized and minutes drafted.

3.Coordination and supervision:

All activities executed during the implementation of this internship must be communicated, coordinated, supervised and finally approved by Isabel Martínez, Programme Officer, Environmental Training Network.

4.Remuneration and expenses: N/A

In accordance with existing rules (ST/AI2014/1) interns cannot receive any remuneration form the Organization in the course of their assignment to a UN Office.

All costs associated with an intern´s participation in the programme must be borne by the applicant, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, etc.

5.Formal education & specific skills and knowledge required:

·Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

·Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

·Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;

·Excellent spoken and written Spanish and English.
