Flag Planting: a tradition with more than 20 years of history in the City of Knowledge

The City of Knowledge Foundation once again held its traditional "Flag Planting" event, an activity that has been held for more than 20 years in commemoration of the patriotic feat of May 2, 1958.
This initiative recalls the symbolic act in which a group of Panamanian students surprised the US authorities by placing 65 Panamanian flags in iconic spots of the then Canal Zone. The act, which was carried out peacefully and silently, is considered a milestone in the fight for national sovereignty.
During the ceremony preceding the planting, Jorge Arosemena, Executive President of the City of Knowledge Foundation, reminded the audience how special this space is where this event is taking place: “We are in an especially emblematic place: the City of Knowledge, what was once Fort Clayton, and thanks to the Torrijos-Carter treaties signed in 1977, we are here today sharing this and many other positive events that have happened for our country.”
“We have seen how this dream of transforming this former military base into a center of knowledge, peace, entrepreneurship, and openness has grown, where university personnel, research centers, companies, and those who promote culture participate in an ordinary day. In other words, the City of Knowledge has become a community whose aspiration is to be an innovative community to promote social change with a humanistic, scientific, and entrepreneurial perspective,” said Arosemena.
For his part, Juan David Morgan, President of the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of the City of Knowledge Foundation, recalled those memories about the beginnings of the City of Knowledge project: “an unprecedented innovative proposal, is today a faithful testimony of the mission of our precursors and of those individuals who formed our first Board of Directors.” He also assured, “planting flags to remember the homeland we deserve is a task that each one must always carry deep within their being.”

Over the years, the "Flag Planting" has grown in participation, with the support of students, collaborators and allies of the Foundation, who join this event with the aim of keeping alive the spirit of struggle and respect for the history of the country.
The flags will remain up throughout the month of November this year, so we invite everyone to come and commemorate our country.
