Organisational context (where the job is located in the organisation)
The Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (“the IFRC”) works to a Business Model and has a Business Delivery Plan with key commitments that sharpen its focus, clarity, and efficiency and accountability results. The Secretariat, headquartered in Geneva, has five decentralized regional offices: one of which is the Americas, guided by the Secretariat strategies for implementation and areas of focus that builds on the vision of strategy 2020. The Americas’ region is organized in two main hemispheres: a group of service-based departments and geographical configurations of (i) Country Cluster Support Teams and (ii) Country Office(s), as well as the Deputy Regional Director, each of them led by the Regional Director; and another hemisphere: six building blocks composed by (i) Partnerships and Resource Development, (ii) Policy, Strategy and Knowledge; (iii) Communication, (iv) Disaster and Crisis: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, (v) Health and Water and Sanitation, (vi) Logistics, each of them led by the Deputy Regional Director.
The Americas Region Office is headquartered in Panama City, Panama and provides coverage through regional cluster groups to all National Society members in the Americas. The Senior Communication Officer reports directly to the Regional Communications Manager ARO.
Under the supervision of the Regional Communications Manager, the Senior Communications Officer will assist in promoting the image and reinforcing the profile of the International Federation by strengthening the communications capacity of the programmes in the region, in line with Strategy 2020. S/he will ensure effective internal and external communications into four groups: services to vulnerable people; capacity building and knowledge management; humanitarian diplomacy and governance, management leadership and corporate services. In addition, the Senior Communications Officer will support and supervise the production of a variety of communications materials, including publications, leaflets, infographics, case studies, stories, audio files and videos, as well as web and social media content related to the IFRC core areas of work.
Job duties and responsibilities
Contribute to the development and implementation of the regional communications strategy:
· Coordinate and implement communications plans for the Americas Region that support programmatic and policy priorities.
· Participate in the strategic planning of the non-emergency programmatic areas to ensure coherent and consistent messaging across IFRC's regional representations and country offices.
· Serve as auxiliary to the emergency communications officer during emergency operations, helping to coordinate content development with National Societies.
Strengthen the network of National Societies’ communications focal points in the region:
· Conduct a mapping of qualifications and competencies in the region.
· Recommend and implement strategic interventions to address the identified needs and challenges.
· Update the database of communications focal points and ensure continuous engagement through online platforms.
Gather, produce and edit stories profiling the achievements of the National Societies, with a focus on the impact on people's lives:
· Publish content on the organisational social media and other online platforms.
· Improve the quality of storytelling focusing on people-centred stories.
· Gather and disseminate quality materials produced by National Societies and regional or country level IFRC's offices.
Support, supervise and advise on the production of a variety of communications materials to raise awareness of the IFRC/RCRC role:
· Produce and develop print and digital materials, such as publications, newsletters, case studies, human impact stories, banners, leaflets, infographics, and other web and social media content related to the IFRC core areas of work.
· Supervise and advise on the production of audio-visual materials (photos, podcasts, videos, etc.).
· Advise on web and social media content initiatives, and provide support to the programmes and National Societies on the implementation of these initiatives.
· Develop graphic, audio-visual, web and social media content to support resource mobilisation campaigns during emergencies.
· Organise capacity building activities related to graphic design, production of audio-visual materials, and development of web and social media content for Nationals Societies' communications staff.
Carry out any other additional tasks required by the Regional Communications Manager.
Graduate in communications/journalism/public relations
Web writing and editing
Social media/community management
5-7 years' experience working in the area of communications/public relations/advocacy
Experience in content development and graphic design
Experience in managing social media tools and multimedia
Professional experience in a National Society/Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (preferred)
Knowledge, skills and languages
Excellent writing and content development skills
Self-supporting in computers (including web and social media tools)
Graphic design skills
Audio-visual production skills (video/photography)
Skills in training and developing staff (preferred)
Fluent spoken and written English
Fluent spoken and written Spanish
Good command of another IFRC official language (French, Portuguese) Preferred
