Webinar on How to Solve a 2000-Year-Old Problem

The Panamanian Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics (FUNDAPROMAT) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) welcome you to join our Math Webinar in English #51, which will take place on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025 at 5 pm Panama time, 6 pm EDT. This Webinar is free and open to the general public, which means that kids and adults of all ages are welcome to attend. 

In this Math Webinar in English, our invited speaker Dana Mackenzie, a mathematician who went rogue and became a popular science writer, will be presenting on "How to Solve a 2000-Year-Old Problem." In 2012, a college friend of Dana Mackenzie sent him a recreational math problem that took him a year to solve. Mackenzie’s friend had posed the problem to every mathematician he could, for 30 years, but had never found anyone who was either able to solve it or knew the answer. But the problem was considerably older than that! In this webinar, Dana Mackenzie will state the problem that involves horse racing, describe its history and explain how he found the general solution, in a journey that was full of twists and turns, both mathematically and personally. The answer is guaranteed to surprise you!
