UNEP Champions of the Earth Nominations are open
The environmental emblematic award of the United Nations, Champions of the Earth 2012, which recognizes distinguished visionaries, leaders in politics, science, business initiatives and civil action, is receiving nominations from individuals all over the world.
The award ceremony will take place next year previous to the meeting at Río+20, two decades after the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro, 1992, which established treaties on biodiversity, climate change and soil desertification, as well as the course of the actual sustainable development. It also comes 40 years after the Stockholm Conference in 1972, which established the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The award, organized by the UNEP, has the objective of encouraging men and women whose actions and leadership have had a positive impact on the environment. Be it by supporting the development and management of natural resources, showing new ways of dealing with climate change or raising awareness about the new environmental challenges, the Champions of the Earth must serve as an inspiration for new actions taking place all over the world.
