Inauguration of the XIV National Congress on Science and Technology
From the 17th to the 20th of October 2012, the XIV National Congress on Science and Technology, organized by the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science (APANAC), took place at the City of Knowledge Convention Center.
The Congress began with welcoming remarks by Dr. Victor Sánchez Urrutia, President of the XIV National Congress on Science and Technology, who stressed that the event represents a true measure of the state of science in Panama. He also stated that the growth of science in Panama is due to the incorporation of new projects that happen because of the support of several institutions that are committed to the promotion of science in our country.
Meanwhile APANAC President, Dr. Jorge Motta, stated that we have a different country now than 27 years ago when APANAC was founded. With this new reality we face major challenges such as guiding our youth towards building a better world by generating new ideas for the benefit of all.
Dr. Oris Sanjur presented a brief review of the recipient of the APANAC 2012 Science Award, Dr. Richard Cooke, who has dedicated his life to improving our understanding of the lives of indigenous people in Panama. For his part, Dr. Cooke was delighted with the award and took the opportunity to share his stories about when he first came to Panama in 1969.
After that, the Granting of the National Decoration of the Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero was given to doctors Yuan Tse Lee, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contribution to the study of the dynamics of chemical elementary processes, and Eric Green, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Both had words of praise for Panama and the science practiced in the country.
Dr. Ruben Berrocal, National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, highlighted the role of science to establish Panama into a knowledge hub, and officially inaugurated the Congress, which is the main space to exhibit the progress and results of scientific investigations nationwide.
