ForestFinance and Espacio Panamá create initiative regarding the International Year of Forests
The year 2011 was declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations to raise awareness and strengthen the sustainable forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
A high percentage of Panama’s territory consists in wet tropical forests that are being deforested on a daily basis thus reducing the habitat of many species and therefore affecting different ecosystems. Deforestation in Panama reaches up to 40,000 hectares in a country with 75% of forest vocation land that has great potential to develop projects of this nature.
With the objective of celebrating the year of the forests and raise awareness, the Panamanian-German company ForestFinance and the cultural center Espacio Panamá have decided to do different activities, which include a photography contest with the objective of reflecting the diversity of tropical forests, nature and how human beings coexist with their environment.
