Red Cross Week at the City of Knowledge
Hasta: Mayo 13, 2011 - 5:00 pm
The Red Cross Week starts with a ceremony next Monday, May the 9th, in the Convention Center of the City of Knowledge
Founded in 1919, the International Federation of Red Cross Societies and Red Half Moon (IFRC) is the biggest humanitarian organization in the world. The Federation carries out rescue operations that help catastrophe victims with the support of its 186 National Society members and its nearly 100 million volunteers. Their principal areas of work are: saving lives; protecting the means of support by helping in the recovery after disasters and crisis; enable a healthy and safe life; and promote social inclusion with a non violent and peaceful culture. The Federation currently operates for all the Americas from the City of Knowledge campus.
The national day for the Red Cross is celebrated each year on May the 8th commemorating the birth of Henry Dunant, the Red Cross founder, and in recognition of the efforts of all the National Societies worldwide. Within this framework; and with the help of the City of Knowledge and the Panamanian Red Cross, the IFRC Zone for the Americas promotes this year the celebration of the Red Cross Week with the objective of raising public awareness in the Panamanian people, its government institutions, civil societies, private companies, and international organizations; in order to strengthen the response capacity of any country facing natural events that give way to great magnitude disasters.
During the opening activities of the Red Cross Week in the City of Knowledge we will be showing the documentary “Inside Disaster Haiti”, followed by a discussion group and the inauguration of the photographic exhibit “The disaster from within: Images of the Haiti and Chile Earthquakes” that will remain open to the public until Friday the 13th of May at the City of Knowledge Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Also, from Monday the 9th to Wednesday the 11th of May, there will be an exhibit outside the building consisting of emergency material used by the Red Cross during disasters.
