2011 Spanish Edition Launch of the Sphere Handbook

Tuesday, July 26, at 10:00 a.m. the 2011 Spanish edition of the Sphere Handbook Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response” will be launched at the Convention Center inside the City of Knowledge.

The Sphere Project, created in 1997, is a consortium formed by national NGOs, United Nations organisms, donators, governments, awareness groups, communitarian organizations, individual actors across the world and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies that has its headquarters in Geneva.  Its objective is to improve the quality of humanitarian response offered to people affected by disasters or armed conflicts.

The Sphere Project has developed its emblematic Sphere Handbook, which collects a group of basic principles and universal norms of the humanitarian area.  Within its pages a common terminology is proposed as well as orientation to guarantee efficiency and accountable humanitarian response.

The launch, organized by UNICEF, City of Knowledge Foundation, ACNUR, OCHA, CARE, OPS, OXFAM, IFRC, WVI, Plan International and Habitat for Humanity, has the goal to present the changes in the new manual which involved 650 experts from 300 organizations in 20 countries. Besides, it aims to promote a wider application of the Sphere Project by providing a space to share learned lessons and application of knowledge.

The event, which will be broadcasted live via web, will count with the participation of governmental entities, NGOs, academic entities, UN agencies, and more.
