Challenges Phase of the Second Panamanian Space Science Olympiad
The National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT), the City of Knowledge Foundation and the Ministry of Education (MEDUCA), announce the National Final of the Second Panamanian Space Science Olympiad, which takes place at the City of knowledge Convention Center.
This is an initiative that aims to promote the development of educational projects that involve primary and secondary education students in the development of scientific competences in the areas of mathematics, physics, astronomy, astronautics and related sciences.
The Panamanian Space Science Olympiad is aimed at students between second and eleventh grades who are interested in the fascinating world of space science. Through this educational initiative, we seek to create spaces that promote the learning and teaching of astronomy and space engineering in official and private schools in the country.
At a national level in the Second Olympiad more than 900 students were interested so there were three times as many participants as in the First Olympiad. 52% of the students were male and 48% female, of which 61% belonged to private schools and 31% to official schools in the provinces of Chiriquí, Herrera, Los Santos, Coclé, Panama, West Panama, Colon, Bocas del Toro and Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé, who will compete in the Challenges Phase.
In this Challenge Phase, participating students must pass a series of tests that range from scientific problems, astronomical observations, robotic challenges, to individual and group tests, among others. In this stage, 5 students will be selected to represent the country in the Latin American Astronomy and Astronautics Olympiad (OLAA) to be held in the month of October 2019 in Puebla, Mexico.
The Second Space Science Olympiad is organized by SENACYT, the City of Knowledge Foundation (FCDS) and the Ministry of Education (MEDUCA), with the support of the Astronomical Observatory of the Technological University of Panama, the University of Panama, the National Service Aeronaval, FAS Panama, Arkalab, Itech, EduPan, the Biomuseo, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, among other strategic allies.
During the challenges phase of the Panamanian Space Science Olympiad, various activities will be held that will be open to the public at the City of Knowledge Convention Center. On Saturday, May 11, we will have a day of activities open to the public where we will have the Space Robotics Challenge, as well as other activities such as: virtual reality, planetarium and many more. You cannot miss it, come and enjoy with your family and friends.
