What is the City of Knowledge?

Just a few minutes from Panama’s urban center, and right across from the Panama Canal, the 120 hectares and over 200 buildings of the former Clayton military base have been transformed into the Ciudad del Saber, the City of Knowledge.

Here, entrepreneurs, scientists, thinkers, artists, community leaders, as well as experts in government, NGOs and international organizations work together to develop initiatives that generate social change.

Our mission: To be an innovative community that encourages social change through humanism, science and entrepreneurship.

Our vision: A prosperous, inclusive, democratic and sustainable future for Panama and the world.

HISTORY

In 1993, a group of Panamanian businessmen envisioned creating a “Socratic forum,” making use of some of the infrastructure in the Reverted Areas (the former Canal Zone), a project for which they were granted backing from the Government of Panama one year later. In order to carry out this initiative, the City of Knowledge Foundation was established in July of 1995.

Based on the Decree Law Nº 6 of 1998, the State stipulated the transfer of 120 hectares of the former Fort Clayton to the City of Knowledge Foundation. The site was handed over to the National Government, which, during the same ceremony, passed on to the Foundation the land and the facilities that now make up the City of Knowledge. Two days later, on December 2, 1999, the project’s founding team’s eleven members walked onto the site.
